Worth upgrading to IP.Board 4.x.x? a couple of question.

Shnepsey

Question

Hi everyone,

I would like to ask few questions before upgrading my current system (ipb 3.4.7) to 4.x.x.

1. Will all the applications / hooks I have currently installed work in the next version?

2. How do I upgrade? just how I used to do before with the small updates for example 3.4.5 to 3.4.6 and 3.4.7 etc? or is the upgrading process different?

3. What about the theme I am currently using, will I have the option to use it after the upgrade or will I have to use a new one made especially for 4.x.x ?

4. Where can I see the actual changes ? is there any official topic about it?

5. What do you guys recommend ? should I stay with 3.4.7 for now or should I upgrade?

6. What about facebook-steam-google integration? I have it ready in 3.4.7 will it work in 4.x.x as well?

That's all for now, thank you all for your time and help.

1. No, all apps for IPB 3 have to have 4.x versions, most of which have upgradeable-to versions, so that means that you'll be able to keep your data if the app you need on 4.x is there. If you rely on a broad amount of apps it may be better to wait.

2. Take backups of both the database and all of your files. The upgrading process should be the same. What i did was remove all the files except conf_global.php and then upload all the IPS4 files and visit admin/upgrade. We kept the following folders aswell: "downloads" "public" "uploads".

3. The latter unfortunately. Yep.

4. There's tooooons of changes, too many to list for me in this answer. IPS4 is a completely new system functionality and code wise.

5. Wait it out a little bit if your community is running just fine. Look around for IPS4 apps/plugins that you think you're gonna get when you do finally upgrade and gather some more information. Check out topics on the ips website and read up on all the different changes they made.

6. Facebook & Google are natively there, there's a plugin for steam integration. Should work exactly the same as far as i know.

About this, I was talking about custom apps that I am using, such as the following apps:

https://community.invisionpower.com/files/file/5039-it39s-the-final-countdown/
https://community.invisionpower.com/files/file/3324-advanced-tags-amp-prefixes/

https://community.invisionpower.com/files/file/3834-topic-template-system/

Those are the apps I need to see working on 4.x version, I have those currently installed in my current board.. should I just wait or there is a solution for that?

i think tags have been integrated into IPS4 and for the Topic Template this app i think u can use for a replacement

https://community.invisionpower.com/files/file/7606-forms/

generates forms for topics, email, and contact

the countdown however is not available yet, it depends if RAW will remake it as he has a few apps to upgrade for IPS4 so it could take a while unless he decides to drop it so only 1 app preventing u from upgrading to IPS4 though if i were in your shoes i would look at the stability and reviews/complaints for the software see if its getting a nice comment on and doesnt have much glitches or bugs that would make your website unstable and crash, also u can try IPS4 on localhost with a copy of your IPB3 database, just upgrade it to the latest version and see how it works test it out see if u like it and then after that trial period u can make a proper decision whether its worth upgrading or not

sometimes its better to find out for yourself before u jump into anything just cause someone says its ok to, with what i said above u can have first hand experience on how IPS4 is and come up with ur own answer as to whether u should upgrade or not, just use the advice/info u gain from others as a reference when making your decision

If you're like me, using a lot of apps and hooks, i'd advice you to wait few weeks until every app is up to date

I thought the time I waited till now is enough this is why I came up with this thread but apparently it wasn't enough.

But well, I just need few apps to continue working (the apps I mentioned above).

Thank you all for answering my questions, I will keep an eye on what's happening with those apps.
