I use IPB 3.4.4, and is always to register users with nicks (awdlkjs, admjkshdsd, kjskdjsa) to do fakes with emails advertising products sex and drugs. You need to enable spam filters on your site (such as ReCaptcha - there are configuration options for it in your ACP).
