I've been scratching my head at this now for quite some time and none of the documentation mentions it: How does the user selling the file get paid? I'd imagine they could input their PayPal email address and it'll use the PayPal payment method to send the amount (minus the commission) to their account? Am I mistaking this whole process as complex and advanced when it's really simple?

Yeah, I would like to offer a way for people to sign up and sell their work, much like a marketplace but where everything is automated. How does the member who is selling the paid file get paid? I would assume the system will add a balance to their account for use on purchasing our products and subscriptions, which would be nice but not exactly what I'm looking for.

individual members can’t get paid. in the payment settings, you have to enter an api key and a “secret” id, linking to your paypal.

Then what's the point in a commission? What purpose does that serve?

It doesn't, it's a stupid application. The only workaround is really just managing the money circulated on the site. Users would pay for products using the application, and you would manually send money given to you to the appropriate user. If not already, I'd suggest a "Seller" class, where those members HAVE to have some payment details on record, so when it's time to pay them, you don't have to hunt down their payment info. You can make this required per-class via Profile Completion settings.

Commerce is a bit tricky so let me break down how a single transaction works, assuming you have everything configured properly.

1. User A purchases a file or subscription from User B for say, $10 USD.
2. Those funds ($10 USD) are deposited into a payee account, which would be the PayPal account you added to your website.
3. User B then accesses their client panel on your site and submits a withdraw request.
4. Assuming you have a commission for the site, let's assume 10%, User B can only submit a request for $9 since $1 goes to your site.
5. That $9 is then processed as its own invoice and is paid out automatically by your PayPal account (which needs access to Payouts on PayPal).

Commerce will do what you want but you can't avoid being the middleman — any transaction goes through your PayPal. This protects both your site and all users involved as well, which unfortunately also makes you an arbitrator for any disputes.
