Parent & Child Theme Setup

Hello,

I have a 4.3 IPS forum and have made many edits to my theme. The trouble is, when I need to update the theme (new version of the same theme)... I need to reapply all the edits I have made. 

Am I missing an easier way to do handle this upgrade process? I read somewhere that you could have a PARENT theme installed and then a CHILD theme, with only one of them holding edits (and the other is the one that gets updated with new releases).

Any Help/Advice is appreciated

Simply install the theme twice, edit the second copy, and set the parent theme as the primary copy.
