As many of you noticed, I'm sure, WebFlake was offline for an inordinate amount of time yesterday. At approximately 4pm EST, WebFlake became the target of an unwarranted Distributed Denial of Service (DDOS) attack. For whatever reason, the culprit decided it wise to claim responsibility for the action on Twitter: Ironic, no? Funnies aside, the user responsible has been inactive for roughly eight months so we're under the impression that he used a duplicate account that was coincidentally banned. Update: We've identified ProHex as also being JohnnyBoy and Websec. Both were issued warnings for violating our no-advertising policy, especially for third-party reseller hosting. Seems to be the reason for the anger; the reason for the attack is still highlighted in the embedded tweet. That said, Phun opted to take the server offline for several hours while the attacker had his tantrum, which was the best solution at the time so in reality, the attacker was only responsible for an hour or two of downtime. The user behind this attack is evidently ProHex (his twitter account can be seen above). Given the ease of anonymity these days, we've taken whatever recourse is available to us, such as reporting his falsified WhoIs data to ICANN and reporting his site and usage of said site to both his domain registrar and hosting provider. Correspondence has been sent to the lone service provider he utilized within the United States and if ProHex is indeed an American citizen, the provider will be able to trace the connection and report him to the proper authorities. We'd be happy to share a list of compiled IP addresses but most, if not all, would be traced back to a VPN service. Yes, it's a bit odd that a community like WebFlake would be seeking legal recourse as a result of a DDOS attack but despite what WebFlake offers here in the way of content, we're so much better than the rest. We stand for something and actually have principles and morals. That said, because we don't condone DDOS or hacking attempts, we won't openly encourage anyone to make malicious use of the information we've provided but what we don't know won't hurt us, either!
