Degree in Web Design & Development | Hosting

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Lately I have been interested in attempting to earn a degree in Web Design and Web Development. I do some work for my friends and other online communities. I feel fairly confident with my skills and feel like it may be a smart move, I just do not have the money for all the resources and costs of college courses. I am also intrigued with hosting. I have been speaking with family who say they would be willing to invest some money to get a kick start if it had real potential. Does anybody know exactly how hosting companies work? What would be my first steps? What about offering domain registration? Anybody with thoughts or information about any of this, I am glad to receive any feedback. Thank you for your time. Hope you have a great day!

Regards,

Pop

I won't comment much on web development degrees, as there's a TON of information to discuss in relation to it. However, in regards to hosting.. you'd likely be interest in a "reseller" plan through a company such as GoDaddy. More information here:
http://www.godaddy.com/hosting/reseller-hosting.aspx?ci=73580

Here's some quick info directly from their FAQ:

What is Reseller Hosting?
Go Daddy Reseller Hosting combines the flexibility and power of your own server with the functionality of cPanel®, WHM, and WHMCS. We give Web professionals the power to be their own hosting company.

With reseller Web hosting you can divide the disk space and bandwidth of your main account to create individual hosting accounts for your customers. The number of individual hosting accounts you can create is up to you and if you need more space you can upgrade to a larger plan.

With Reseller Hosting you can:

[*]Host multiple websites from a single hosting account [*]Control features and plans offered to your customers [*]Sell and provision hosting accounts under your own brand [*]Bill your customers directly
    Reseller Hosting product support page.

Essentially, GoDaddy would rent a dedicated server to you, which you are able to partition to your liking (i.e. separating chunks of resources, such as disk space, memory, cores available, etc) and market them at your own prices with your own site, etc. They also offer a built-in billing system so that you'll never need to handle transactions privately or risk being scammed. There's a wealth of information on their site - have a look at it. :)

Wow, thank you very much. I go through Ubiquity for cloud servers. I noticed they have a reseller option for web hosting, but I have never really gone into that department. I do host websites on the cloud servers I own and just grant them a sub-domain. Isn't GoDaddy supposed to be really expensive?

I'll be sure to look into it when I get a chance. Decided to start hosting for friends and I've let that spread through word of mouth. That turned into me doing HTML coding for them and also selling VPN's. Thank you for your reply.

This is the easiest and free way to start your own web hosting business. your service will become so attractive that you will get your first client registration and first domain hosted in less than 24 hours after sign up! Guaranteed!

you get a completely integrated hosted system that has everything you may need: billing system, domain registration, help desk, client sign up integration and many more.

all your domains are hosted on multiple servers and all your domains utilize over 1000+ IP addresses! Moreover, new IPs and servers are added to the cluster every week. That's a big advantage compared to other reseller hosting providers that put all your hosted domains to the same physical server

All services such as web server, control panel, MySQL, DNS, email are hosted on different physical servers so it unlocks a true power of cloud computing. every domain you host will be serviced from at least 6 different physical servers at the same time. Your clients will love it!
