Pax Posted April 6, 2013 Share Posted April 6, 2013 (edited) I will not include a URL, but my site is currently using IPB, while my landing page is using Wordpress. There are many issues with my current site. Not necessarily because of IPB, but because I have Wordpress as my main landing page along with a somewhat different yet similar forums. It's too much. I don't want to deal with Wordpress anymore; these days, forums have enough capability to provide more than a place for just discussion. My community is a non-profit organization where users can request a teamspeak channel from our large teamspeak server via contact (fill-out form) page, but unlike i currently have it, I want everything on the forums. I've noticed that IPB has a nice contact page plugin, but I'm not sure if IPB is right for what I need. The site just must consist of an organized forum ( similar to webflakes ). This will probably largely depend on the theme. The site will also need some plugins to keep users entertained because I want users to stay active on the forums after they request their team-speak channel. I guess you could say that this would be a service mixed in with a "general community" mixed up with a lot of different types of people. Gamers, talkers, movie watchers, etc. I need my site to be finished really soon, ( by the end of this weekend ) but I can't decide which forum software to use.. Guest Hitsugaya Posted April 6, 2013 Share Posted April 6, 2013 I would definitely keep using IPB and I'll tell you why; you can use the IP Content to show up as your front page. This means that you won't have to worry about Wordpress anymore. Follow this guide to make IP Content your front page. This is widely used on my forum and extremely helpful for making sure people follow a format when they apply for something. It's more organized then using a contact form. You can use this to have them request teamspeak channels. IP.Board is very flexible and customizable so I suggest sticking with it. If you need more support drop me a PM. I could have sworn I saw an IPB plugin on this site that was like a landing page for IPB, but looked really nice, sorda similar to what you showed me but a bit more lightweight. Also,The current host I have, www.bluevm.com is overselling to the max, my sites are always laggy with them. Instead of starting a new thread I might as well ask if you know any good host for IPB, fairly affordable. It has 10GB of disk space, 100GB of monthly traffic, 5 email accounts, up to 10 domains, no ads, back ups 24/7, MySQL and PHP services etc. I would recommend it, although I've been having problems with it using a domain from register.com. Other than that, I works perfectly. You can sign up here. Remember, this is a free host. There is always a catch on every free hosts, whether it's limited features, slow connects or bad support. UltraHost has one owner, meaning that UltraHost has bad support because your tickets are only answered when this owner is online. But it has good features though. Unfortunately, I don't have a source of income. I don't know about other users here, but I'm still in high school. When you don't have income coming in, you have to get the best you can even though it sucks. Once I get a job (it's hard as the U.S. is in a recession), I will save up for a good host. First off, my father doesn't condone in spending money online, especially if it's for something, quoted by my father, "is a stupid waste of money." He would never just give me $10.00 to buy hosting. Secondly, my father watches my checking account like a guard dog. He knows exactly what I buy, what time I bought it, and what I bought. This makes it more difficult to buy anything. I don't have any cash so that isn't an option. Also, transfers of any kind like to and from my savings account and even PayPal show up in his history. If I go to an ATM to get cash, he can even see this. There is no way I could buy hosting. This is why I have to stick with free hosting, for now. Lousy customer support, and bloated prices for sub-par hardware. Frankly speaking, GoDaddy's baseline VPS systems are better than a majority of HostGator's "dedicated" servers. If you're looking for a legitimate web host, GoDaddy is the best route. Their shared hosting accounts come with a guaranteed 99.99% uptime, ridiculously cheap prices, and are feature-rich as well. I've been an affiliate/reseller for the last couple of years, and have loved every minute of it. Hands down, they also have the best technical support team out there (they persistently go above and beyond). You don't get redirected to some third-world nincompoop with a flawed understanding of basic support, and you certainly don't spend hours on the phone getting the run around. On point - IPB is much like GoDaddy. It's packed with a ton of features and customization options. xenForo was once on par with IPB, but has fallen behind greatly. vBulletin is overrated and only usable by advanced web-devs. These are all my personal opinions based on my own experiences (with everything I've just discussed) over the course of several years.
