Prinsess 2
So, I wasn't exactly sure where to ask this question, so forgive me if I'm in the wrong spot. I know it's ALWAYS recommended to upgrade to the newest version of IPB for security reasons, but I get super frustrated to get my board running smoothly (theme, plugins, etc.) and then have to upgrade. I have stuck with version 4.2.2 and have been fine with it. I don't run a gaming board, or have a ton of members. So, I guess my question is...what would be the major advantage to me upgrading? And, should I do it, or just stay where I'm at? Thanks so much.
DJFang 1
From my experience, the migration to 4.3 wasn't smooth and this has been with every 4.X number release, since 4.1. If you don't have really a lot of members or it's a gaming board, then, I suppose, it's just fine (I don't remember if it was marked as a critical security update, though). Most of the themes and plugins work just fine, without the need of an upgrade (4.1 -> 4.2), what made the upgrade not so smooth were the customizations to the code I had made. Long story short: it may have some bumps here and there but it generally should be fine. The custom code you may have added could be the only problem. Edit: I forgot that the latest release is 4.4.3. As far as I remember, 4.2.2 dates back to the summer of 2017 and you may really want to go to the newest version. You've been at 4.2.2 for a while and there were several critical security updates since then, a few of them related to adminCP security. MrFantastic 0
If you want to know if you "have" to upgrade or not look at IPS release notes, if there is security issues within a release you'll see a warning icon next to the release. https://invisioncommunity.com/release-notes/ I'm running 4.3.6 on one site without any security issues. My other site is running 4.4.1 since that is the last "security" release. It doesn't matter if you have a gaming board or a ton of members - the evil bots could care less about that stuff. Best advice, upgrade to be safe because if something goes wrong you're going to be spending a lot of time cleaning up the mess. If you're frustrated with the upgrade process and your themes / plugins - simple, don't customize anything. Then you generally won't have an issue. Accept the fact that if you customize, you're going to have to put in time to upgrade. That's just a fact of life. Head Guru 106
To put it simply no, you do not HAVE to upgrade. However, it is strongly recommended that you do keep your IPS software updated. There is usually security issues within releases as well as a lot of bug fixes. So I personally would recommend that you DO upgrade. It is the best if you want to keep the security of your forum up to date and also give your members all the features available in the IPS software.
