Considering domain names are cheap as f*@k now, there really isn't any reason to get a free one unless you are doing a proof of concept site or something, but yeah there are a ton out there for like 89 cents, so no real point anymore.

When was the last time anyone actually used a free domain for a real business site? They are only good for sandbox sites and aren't typically SEO-friendly.

This.

Just to add something that was not mentioned; Free domains are usually way-to-go for malware and scam websites, as these often get blacklisted, so they can be easily republished on new domain for no cost.

For reasons above, reputation of free domains is non-existent.
That does impact site ranking, and also repel some visitors (eg. myself).

I used to use the Freenom domains whenever I didn't feel like paying for a domain name. However, I've heard recently that they phased out the free domain names and people have reported that their domain names have been suspended for no reason, and they were being redirected to some shady sites. Now I just stick to Namecheap, I literally just bought a domain name good for the next two years for only $8. If there are any free domain name registrars left, I wouldn't trust them but like anything if you're willing to take the risk, don't be disappointed if your site gets compromised.
