Yes. I pay for Kaspersky. I dont trust these "Trail Reset" Tools and other Patchers. I think buying security software is worth it.

I have to agree here. I rarely pay for software (other than software for schooling) but security software is something I have zero problem paying for. I personally use ESET and I've never had an issue.

Besides a software firewall/antivirus solution, I’ve often heard that a hardware firewall using a Linux box is another good way to go. Problem for me with that is simply... I’m too lazy to add the firewall ability to my Plex server.

Using a firewall is not the only thing that keep bad guys out of your network and data.

I am using a Ubiquiti UniFi Security Gateway 3P as secondary router, which is bridged to my main router and all the traffic gets routed to that Security Gateway. The clients at home are all protected with ESET Endpoint Antivirus and are controlled by the ESET Remote Administrator 5/6 (idk). The clients are also connected to a Squid Proxy Server with SquidGuard and ClamAV. It scans all the traffic. All the clients on my network are using my own DNS server. It forwards all the requests to OpenDNS, which is also configured with some content filtering.

I know its overpowered, but you can never be secured for 100%.

Using a Linux firewall requires some knowledge of Linux. You'll mostly use iptables or shoreline as a firewall.

I do have a tip for users that want to use a firewall, but don't have the money for it. Search on Google for pfSense or SOPHOS XG Firewall Home edition. These two appliances are free and run as virtual machines.

I did once through eBay as it was a lot cheaper. I bought Trend Micro for about $4 Australian - Which isn't much ... It was a 3 computer/mobile device licence which lasted for 12 months. The only thing that annoyed me was they were constantly updating the software, not the definitions, just the software itself so I ended up going back to free anti virus and it works just as good.
