I used http://www.w3schools.com/ and some of my grandfather's coding books.

 

http://www.w3schools.com/ - one of the best.

 

w3schools is actually not a place I would recommend going as the information supplied there is not up to standard and it is outdated. For a hardcore beginner, I recommend http://www.codecademy.com/ as you code while you learn and they just do a very good job at creating lessons.

I'll add another one to the list, it's a decent website where you can find a lot of free tutorials and not just about html/css, it's something like lynda but with a bunch of free tutorials and then there's some which you have to pay.
