Does anyone recall how the downloads system was done on FC? I think it was similar to what we have now, but my memory is escaping me.

As far as I remember, they used  the Hide Content application.. Then when they put it on I am pretty sure you had to have 15 post's to use the download manager.

Well, now that you mention that, I doubt it will make a return due to the removal of the actual download topics.

The old format for ForumCore was a spam fest. We had it set up so that users had to either "like" or reply "thanks" to the download topic to gain access to it. Problem is, so many other sites cloned that format that we had thousands of users replying with "thanks", "cool", etc even though we had changed the configuration to require a "like" only.

Believe me, I empathize with the lack of activity with the rest of you. Not particularly thrilled about the concept of nearly two year's worth of work being for nothing. The Staff team here is incredibly gifted and dedicated, and I assure you, we will do everything within our power to prevent WebFlake from circling the drain. We haven't given up yet, and you guys shouldn't either. Keep the suggestions coming -- I'm always open to them!

Possible idea would be to limit the downloads per day and tie them to posts. Think x post(s) per allowed download.

Or even have a points system that earns points towards downloads, and every download (depending on whether its a skin, addon, software release, etc.) deducts a certain amount of points from the user.

While it's not the worst concept, the drawback would be obtaining the "points". If it's anything similar to the site I'm sure you're referencing, I'm not inclined to believe allowing users to earn points by way of posts would be a good idea. If we were to put a heftier posting restriction on downloads, that's a one-off issue with spam per user. Whereas a points system would encourage rapid and persistent spam to accumulate points. There are always other alternatives of course, such as reputation, downloads per submitted file, etc.. but I just don't see it adding any value to the community.

Besides, as much as we try to shun WebFlake clones, it'd be a little silly if we were to clone our competition. Sure, we could do it and likely do it better, but WebFlake is the original.

Very true.. didn't even really put that into consideration that every other site uses a point system.
