In fact i would go for IPB all the time again when it comes over! I love it since the first day. The only truth in this is that Darby and Sullivan are former members of the vBulletin team. The rest is complete bullshit. Darby and Sullivan left the vBulletin team after Internet Brands acquired Jelsoft, the original company that owned the vBulletin software. Both Darby and Sullivan wanted to rewrite the entire code base for vBulletin using Zend PHP (the framework for XenForo) but were challenged by their (then) employers, Internet Brands. So, they left the team and started XenForo. A little bit of research on XenForo would tell you that the platform is a hell of a lot more robust (especially in security) than what vBulletin ever was. vBulletin's issues with security have absolutely nothing to do with the XenForo team. OpFor Posted July 2, 2014 Share Posted July 2, 2014 (edited) This is wrong in so many ways. XenForo is far from being bested by IPS. Each platform has their individual strengths and weaknesses, but XenForo has plenty more to offer. They've actually released both 1.2 and 1.3 within the last year and several third-point releases in between. XenForo is far more active than IPS in terms of proactive development, especially with their new approach to said development (releasing smaller patches for continued content rather than one big patch every few months). XF 1.3 focused heavily on moderation improvements. Version 1.4 is rumored to be core improvement oriented (the features allegedly "missing").mmj - Bottom line, XenForo is a more sociable platform. Far easier to design and manipulate on the fly in comparison to IPB's rigid template system (which doesn't grant access to core functionality and requires you to delve into your FTP). There is no denying that IPB has far more built-in features, but I'd rather start with a product that has less and build upon it, than work with bloatware. XenForo is not inferior to IPB overall. Don't let biased critique sway you from creating an objective opinion about both platforms. For the record, I favor IPB but love XenForo as well. The XF template system in XF is bad in my opinion. There really is no need to dive into FTP for templates (for IPB) unless you have a specific editor (like Notepad++) that you like to use, or you're uploading team icons or images for the style. XF's built in template editor feels messy and weird, and it just doesn't work for me. I can go and edit anything for my site template and be done within a matter of seconds with IPB, just doesn't happen with XF. Not to mention the fact that XF's default template is horrible and requires a ton of work if you want a nice looking style based off of it. Regarding updates, I'd rather have massive updates than smaller updates. Sure, I might need to redo my stuff, but fixing things for every small update is a pain and just not something I have time for. Big updates are also nice because we get to see all of our requested features come at the same time, not scattered out between multiple updates. Regarding vBulletin, 4.x.x is OK, but XF and IPB murder it in terms of functionality. vBulletin 3.8 has, and probably always will be the high point of that software. After that, it's just been a downward spiral. In terms of security, vBulletin isn't THAT bad, it's just many site owners have no idea how to properly secure their site, and vB requires a bit of extra work for security. It is known to have had some pretty well known exploits in the past though. IPB is not bloated at all though, I have yet to find useless features in the software. Not to mention that IPB has other official suite addons, like Nexus, Downloads, Content, and Blog. XF only has Downloads, which is very disappointing to me. Overall, if you want a complete suite, open source software, and a platform that is very flexible, go with IPB. If you want a "community" feel, go with XF. Luke Posted July 2, 2014 Share Posted July 2, 2014 For me it's this simple: TL;DR: XenForo and IPB are both great, each have their pros and cons, and at the end of the day, it's up to you to decide which one you like better, i'd suggest trying them both out on a local instance.. for example XAMMP or WAMP. VB in the new update, their status destroyed. phpfox vs php-dolphin to me phpfox is easier to manage. I have all 3 on different sites and find that there isn't a lot of difference in them as the missing apps or hooks are all available whether by the developers or 3rd party so they are all just about the same. It just depends on what you want them to do and how much you are willing to invest in time and frustration on making them do what you want them to do. I am not so sure about IPB 4.x though hopefully it won't be a cluster fxxk like VB5.x is/was. Anytime a developer completely rewrites a piece of software there is going to be bugs and glitches just have to hope IPB won't follow in VB's path of ignoring the bugs and hoping the end-users will come up with the fixes Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
