A desktop is probably best, MAYBE a laptop but it would have to have perfect specs for gaming and it would probably be really bulky and only like 2 hrs of battery generally, Just go with Desktop you know, less of a pain and more powerful.

Desktop are powerfull :3

I Agree that desktops are powerful, but nowadays so are laptops. I have switched to a laptop and it runs games just as good as a powerful desktop. Its all in your specs from harddrive, ram, graphics cards etc.  Options is key, so go with a higher speced desktop or laptop in your price range. Can always upgrade either as well.

I agree on that too, but good laptops are expensive (like alienware, razor) where custom build desktop can be cheap (if you choose $99 in every part except processor/video card/motherboard) and still provide good grapics (get a good videocard/graphic card, others apply too)

I didn't build a custom computer but i think i know the basics for building one (do correct me if i am wrong)

Personally from my experiences, laptops are just a pain in the ass.

You expect mobility with it, although you're still really limited. You would need to use a desk in theory, I've had my laptop on my bed sheets/covers many times and it just overheats.

Downsides to your computer overheating is the graphics card actually un-soldering. I would suggest a desktop regardless, and perhaps getting another laptop to use for business and forums use etc.
