Teamspeak is much better suited to larger groups of people, Discord is great but focuses on text chat too much and lacks features like voice/text combined channels.

Don't use a free VPN as they're usually logging everything and using the data you transfer through it for advertising purposes. I'd recommend PrivateInternetAccess as they've been proven to not log anything which gives you great privacy and anonymity.
