I've tried using MyBB numerous times and it's open source nature does have benefits but it really lacks in good UX and feature sets, overall since I've started using IPB I've been much happier with the application itself and the support given by the team (if you're purchasing a licence).

There's an automated tool within the IPS panel that allows you to update. If you have your permissions setup correctly it can do it for you, otherwise it'll request FTP access.
