If you're on offshore hosting, you really don't have to worry about anything.

If you're on shared hosting, try setting your forum to use SMTP and get the credentials and connection info from your host if you're unsure of what they are.

On top of what Para said, http://mxtoolbox.com/ is a great resource, which checks additional blacklists including Spamhaus. You can also verify a connection to your mx server and check DNS records.
