In ACP go to Members - Groups and edit Guest group in Permissions unchek Can access site? and save And now all need login / register to access.

When I upgraded from 4.3.6 to 4.4.1 I changed the php to 7.2 and updated it without problems, now that the 4.4.2 came out it did not give problems when updating it. Check that the version change was successful, delete the cache and try again.
