I prefer Dark Themes but I agree with Faithman to serve the most of your members you should allow them to choose between a default light and a dark theme if they like. Generally, gaming communities prefer Dark ones, and coding or other purpose prefer light themes. In both cases don't use a true white or black color fonts.

I think it's more depending on your own use, paid solutions aren't always the best. You also need to consider how big the community is if ever you need help. For age there were a war between Vbulletin and IPB, which was the best... Xenforo is a good alternative I think, but a lot of people tend to prefer IPB/IPS.
